Surviving Cancer
I know many of you may have found this site because you are looking for links
about surviving cancer. Maybe, like myself, you read Evan's book
Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors. His raw and inspiring story about his
own battle with leukemia has meant a lot of many members of my own family.
I receive e-mail on a regular basis from cancer-survivors, family members of
cancer patients, and people just beginning their frightening journey. What
we all share is the fact that reading Evan's book has made us feel
empowered. I gather strength from the letters I read and I have passed
many of them along to Evan.
My mother lives with Multiple Myeloma. Three clinical studies even
failed to help, but even after a grim prognosis issued in 1995 she is
still alive and thriving. Her sister died about 11 years
ago from leukemia. My uncle has been diagnosed with mesothelioma and is
being courted by attorneys almost daily to join in on a lawsuit. My
daughter's young Godfather is going through the first frightening stages
of testing for cancer found on his liver. When I
found Evan's book I felt like a way of looking at cancer had been given
to me as a gift. Fight! My copy is now ragged and well-read, having been
shared with so many people.
Everyone has their own way of dealing with cancer in their lives or in the life
of a family member. My sister and I banked our children's cord blood. As a
family we talk more openly about cancer and health. We laugh. We cry. We live.
We also have survivors to look toward. My paternal grandmother is a two-time breast
cancer survivor. Her daughter, my aunt, is going through the first stages
of her own breast cancer as I write this.
So, while I cannot offer a site chock full of advice and methods for
dealing with cancer in your life, I can offer a site about someone
who beat cancer and has gone on to inspire many others.
I wish you love and health in your life...
